The etchings of Alekos Fassianos | Part one: 1979 - 1988

ATHENS PRINTMAKING ART CENTRE- PANDOLFINI & SIATERLI C.N.P.P. is pleased to invite you to the first part of the modular exhibition “The etchings of Alekos Fassianos: Athens Printmaking Art Centre 1979-2008” opening at ETCH INK art space on Saturday 9th December, 6:30pm-10:30pm.

Opening at the beginning of December, the exhibition will unfold in two consecutive parts, aiming at a thorough presentation of the artist’s etchings, which were produced and printed in collaboration with the studio of the ATHENS PRINTMAKING ART CENTRE – PANDOLFINI & SIATERLI from 1979 to 2008.  This tribute exhibition is the first consistent and systematic effort to document and present the artist’s corpus of etchings, after his death in 2022, and will unravel through a curated exhibition at the ETCH INK art space, a limited-edition catalogue, and a screening of a documentary film from the archive of the Athens Printmaking Art Centre, directed by Nikos Anagnostopoulos.

This comprehensive and in-depth presentation will take place in two parts, the first of which will open in December 2023 focusing on the creative period between 1979-1988. This cultural programme, which will run for the next three months at ETCH INK art space, aims to shed light on the multifaceted work of the artist by demonstrating his unique talent in expressing himself and creating through the art of printmaking, with which he consistently worked throughout his remarkable artistic career.

Art Historian and curator Elli Leventaki, who signs the curatorial text of the exhibition catalogue notes: “His etchings here reflect all his pursuits and aspirations that originated from painting, carrying, in addition, the qualities of the material. From his typically anthropocentric work, he has eliminated unnecessary representational elements, sticking to a simple depiction of the figure and allowing it to occupy most of the paper unhindered. Line and color create dynamic and vivid forms that float in a dream-like world, while small details here and there lend an unpretentious tenderness to the result. Through the two-part modular exhibition ‘The etchings of Alekos Fassianos: Athens Printmaking Art Centre 1979-2008’, a body of the artist’s work is presented, which emerged in collaboration with APAC’s studio over the years and is now part of its collection. It consists of around ninety etchings, many of which are being exhibited for the first time in the public sphere and constitute almost the entirety of his printmaking work with this medium. The aim is to present this aspect of Alekos Fassianos’s work as fully and extensively as possible, as a small homage to his memory.”

The publication includes additional contributions featuring a welcome note by Viktoria Fassianou, as well as texts by the artists Dimitra Siaterli and Pino Pandolfini, illuminating aspects of Alekos Fassianos’s work and their creative collaboration over the years.

The second part of the modular exhibition on the etchings of Alekos Fassianos will open at the beginning of February 2024 at the ETCH INK art space and will feature works created between 1988-2008, including a parallel programme of events and activities.

The exhibition “The etchings of Alekos Fassianos: Athens Printmaking Art Centre 1979-2008” is organised under the auspices and the financial support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture.
