Connections: six Greek female printmakers in Sorelle Festival

ATHENS PRINTMAKING ART CENTER – PANDOLFINI & SIATERLI C.N.P.P. participates in the 2025 edition of the acclaimed culture, arts and female empowerment Sorelle Festival in Faenza, Italy. Upon invitation by its artistic team, Athens Printmaking Art Center presents “Connections: six Greek female printmakers” exhibition of contemporary printmaking that is opening on Friday 7th March at the Stazione degli Artisti in Gambettola. The exhibition features works by contemporary artists, exploring female empowerment, representation and visibility in dialogue with the social, feminist and political concerns of the festival’s theme.

For its sixth edition, Sorelle Festival gets inspired by the stories of women from the past and present, looking toward the future. It focuses on the notion of freedom and liberation, exploring the hard-won freedoms and those which are yet to be achieved.

Athens Printmaking Art Center’s “Connections” exhibition aims to explore and reveal manifestations of female experience and creativity through the work of six contemporary women of the young generation of female artists from Greece. Aligned with the social and political reflections of the Sorelle Festival, the exhibition explores womanhood and embodied experience through the art of printmaking, mapping spaces of empowerment, connection and visibility of women’s stories as opposed to dominant patriarchal discourse.

Τhe artists embrace printmaking as a common artistic language, notable for its clarity and sharpness. Printmaking has historically been related to political and social struggles, operating as a bridge for communities, a means of diffusion and communication,as well as  a vehicle of social protest and resistance. The artists participate with large-scale prints, using techniques such as etching, mezzotint, monotypes and linocut. The exhibition aims to examine how immersion in creativity can create connections and affinities between shared experiences, allowing us to come closer to each other and foster deeper relationships of awareness with ourselves and the world. Tracing areas of closeness, care, intimacy and trust, it unravels a composition of diverse yet connected female voices. Resonating loudly and attuned, these voices articulate multifaceted narratives starting from personal experiences to meet and connect with broader collective claims.

By encouraging openness and artistic creativity, this international cultural collaboration aims to increase visibility of the local art scene abroad, promoting the work of young female artists while offering opportunities for equal representation in the arts.

Founded in 1977 by the artists Pino Pandolfini and Dimitra Siaterli, ΑΤHENS PRINTMAKING ART CENTER – PANDOLFINI & SIATERLI is a historical printing studio and workshop in Athens. It has been running in Athens since the 1970s as an open workshop for art and printmaking. Its activities include many cultural events, exhibitions and exchange exhibitions in Greece and abroad, printing artworks, art editions, cooperation with artists, cultural organizations, galleries, schools, regular seminars and lesson programs.

The mission of the ΑΤHENS PRINTMAKING ART CENTER PANDOLFINI & SIATERLI, from its founding until now, has been to make accessible the language of printmaking, the history, the potential and its particular expressive power in the art world. The lengthy historical pathway of the space includes important collaborations with artists and institutions from Greece and abroad, which have strengthened the cultural exchange and community of the local art scene. By supporting the participation in the creative process and the personal style of the artist, the organization encourages the inherent production of printmaking, as well as the interdisciplinary workings of art.

Athens Printmaking Art Center’s collaboration with the Sorelle Festival and the cultural association Circuiti Dinamici will unfold through two consecutive exhibition exchanges between Greek and Italian artists, the first of which will take place within the framework of the Sorelle Festival in Faenza and other Italian cities, and the second in autumn 2025 at the ETCH INK art space in Athens.

More about Sorelle Festival

Sorelle Festival was born in 2020 from the fortunate encounter between Sos Donna and Veronica Bassani, president of the Faenza-based cultural association Fatti d’Arte and artistic director of the festival. From the very beginning, the goal has been to bring attention and public debate to issues related to women and feminism in its many forms. “We asked ourselves: how can we feel connected to the feminist cause, creating a sense of community in our city as well? How can we break down the indifference and skepticism surrounding these topics? Our answer was: by talking about them, exposing them, exposing ourselves through the language we know best—culture.” A collective project that unites many different voices, all sharing the goal of spreading a message of sisterhood across an ever-expanding territory, reaching beyond the borders of Faenza. Sorelle Festival embraces various creative and cultural languages: from art to philosophy, from music to dance, but also botany, cinema, and even tarot reading. The network of partners is also broad, constantly growing and strengthening, including cultural associations, art galleries and museums, public and private institutions.
